Last year M&S removed best-before dates across more than 300 fruit and veg lines, in a move designed to encourage customers to use their judgement on what is still good to eat. The average family with children throws away food worth £60 a month, which experts say is both a waste of money and bad for the planet because about a third of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions are associated with food and drink. Last year Morrisons switched to best-before dates on its milk while the Co-op removed use-by dates from its own-brand yoghurt. Use-by dates are often found on products, such as milk and yoghurt, where a best-before one might do, a practice blamed for contributing to food waste. Food is still safe to eat after this date but the flavour and texture may not be as good. ![]() While use-by dates are about safety, and applied to foods that go off quickly and could cause food poisoning, best-before is an indicator of quality. “By changing to a best-before date, M&S is instantly helping its customers save money and cut waste by giving them more time to consume the milk they buy.” “The main reason is not drinking before the use-by date,” said David of why so much milk is wasted. This results in waste on an industrial scale, with 490m pints, worth £270m, being poured away, says Catherine Davidof the sustainability charity Wrap. Please educate yourself - 66.✗.✗.A typical household throws away 18 pints of milk a year, usually because the date has expired. We should not be drinking other species milks. Read the China Study and see how bad milk is for humans. Do some research and you'll see that there is still a lot of fat in 0% milk. However over 35% of its calories will be from fat. These figures are misleading as they are based on weight. But come on people you can't even read a simple comparison in a product without someone pointing out we should not be consuming the product at all? To each their own I suppose. Yes I know there are more chemicals in the ground soil and what we feed our animals. Maybe instead of analyzing every single thing we eat or breathe we should talk to a 90 year old person and ask what they did to get to the age they are today. It amazes me the things people focus on today. Seriously, other species milk? I suppose we could pay nursing mothers to continue with the process of creating milk we could sell in stores. I am a Dairy Food Scientist, FYI- based on FDA (in the USA) Legal standard of identity for milk, 0% and Skim milk are IDENTICAL, its just semantics! 0%/skim milk can have up to 0.49% fat and still be classified as 0%.Ġ% milk will be about 5% milk sugar (lactose) and 3.5% protein - which is where the calories are coming from. Scientists have bred cows that produce skimmed milk of less than 1% fat content (New Zealand).īabcock test and Gerber Method could be used for determining fat content. Fat content can also be altered by selective breeding, genetic modifications etc. Whole milk contains 3.5% fat and this fat is removed and required quantity added to obtain desired fat content in milk. Skim milk varieties of 1% and 2% are available in the UK even though 1% milk is not considered to be milk. ![]() Color schemes allow for quick recognition. The fat content of milk is clearly indicated on milk container and also can be identified by the color of label on milk bottle caps. Some people even use the terms interchangeably. Though both skim milk and 0% milk are essentially fat free, skim milk contains equal to or less than 0.5% fat and fat free milk (0% milk) as the name indicates has 0% fat. Lower (at most 12 carbon atoms) saturated fatty acids: 11%ĭifference in Fat Content of Skim Milk and 0% Milk.
